Mojo success

MOJO is the latest edition to the  Bait-Tech groundbait family. Developed using the latest technology and ingredients (designed by, and exclusive to us!) MOJO contains pure fish and the highest grade soluble fishmeals available.

So, when we heard that some of the Korda lads were heading to France, we decided there’s no better test than to arm them with our latest weapon - MOJO.

Cue : Joe Morgan (and a bin-load of carp!)

“Each year, Danny takes the Korda Employees on a trip to France for a week, this year I was required to work during the day; taking pictures and notes for a new project. I wasn’t too worried about missing out during the day, as often with pressured venues it can actually be an edge to rest the swim now and then.

The venue was the same one we’ve been to for the past three years, Maison Du Lac Bleu; a fantastic complex of lakes about 6 hours south of Calais. Of course there are other lakes that don’t require such a long drive but our previous experiences with this place had been so good that the slightly painful journey is a small price to pay!

After a brisk walk round the four lakes we drew numbers out of a hat for swim choice, I’m normally fairly lucky in draws, the previous year I’d came out first…not that it did me any favours, I ended up choosing a swim that had fished particularly well the previous year! This back fired on me as the fish simply weren’t in that area, I thought they would move in at some point but it wasn’t to be. I ended up moving on the last night and saving the blank with a 27lb mirror as I was packing up! This trip I came out 7th out of 17 and chose one of the popular swims on one of the smaller lakes, my original plan was to fish the big lake but when I arrived tired after a long journey the thought of spodding over 100 yards all week wasn’t particularly appealing!”

“Because I was supposed to be working I got my house sorted as quickly as possible then got the old marker float out to get a quick idea of what I had in front of me. The surrounding area was flat, shallow and not very appealing! Out in front I had a couple of islands. The channel in between them looked good, as did the side of the left hand Island. After a few casts I located the bottom of the slope, here it was just under 5 feet deep which was ideal compared to the 2-3 feet depths I had in the rest of my water. I was testing a new groundbait by Bait-Tech called MOJO, and I was using this to bind my spod mix together. I spodded about three kilos of the “Mojo-mix” to this area and decided I’d fish two rods over it, I clipped up my rods on the spot then went off to get some work done! After dinner I flew back to my swim and got the rods out as quickly as possible. One of the rods over the bait was fished with a boilie, the other was just two bits of balanced rubber corn. I put the third rod up my left hand margin as it was a quiet area that had seen little pressure.”

“20 minutes later I was just making a cup of tea when the boilie rod signalled a take, instantly I knew this was a very large carp! It was immensely heavy and slow, not really giving much of a scrap…not that I was complaining, I just wanted it in the folds of my net! A few minutes later a carp of monster proportions was sliding over the net cord, the width of it was something else. On the scales it went 58lb 8oz, a new personal best by about 13lb!! After a few ‘back breaking’ shots I returned the awesome creature back to its murky home. About 11 o’clock that night the other rod on the baited area was away, this one had the power of an Ox and knew exactly how to use it, I stood there in the dark battling it out with this one for about 25 minutes. I’ve caught a few carp in my time but never have I experienced such relentless power! When I’m on my own I always net my fish without a torch, so it wasn’t until I flicked the torch on that I realised I’d just landed a seriously long common, after waking up Ben next door it was time for the moment of truth. The scales spun round to a massive 47lb! The length of the fish was ridiculous, as was the width!”

“The next morning I woke up, looked out and decided I’d have another hour or so sleep. Just as I shut my eyes the right hand rod tore off. After another slow powerful scrap, another mirror of huge proportions was in the net. I was just about to get that one out of the water when the remaining rod on the bait was away! The film crew were already there so this time the fight was being filmed just to add extra pressure on me!

When I saw the depth of this one I could do nothing but laugh in disbelief! Danny commented that it was another good fifty as I lifted the net around it. We decided to weigh that one first as it was definitely bigger than the other and I was going to need as much strength as possible to lift it! We were all as shocked as each other when the needle passed sixty and settled on 61.08!! I can honestly say it was a massive struggle to lift that one for the cameras. My tall, thin figure didn’t really help with matters! Once I’d slipped that one back we did the honours with the remaining chunk! I thought it would be a mid forty but I was soon proved wrong as it hit 52lb on the Reubens! After all that was out of the way, I nipped up to the lodge for a much needed shower then carried on with my work with a massive grin on my face!”

In total, Joe had 10 carp. These consisted of : 58 lb Mirror, 49 lb Mirror, 47 lb Common, 49 lb Mirror, 52 lb Mirror, 54 lb Mirror, 61lb 8 oz Mirror, 42 lb Razor backed Mirror, 52 lb Mirror, 58 lb Mirror

This 58lb mirror was the pick of my French carp.
Our spod mixes were based around Mojo (above) which we used to bind the whole lot together. The rest of the mix consisted of pellets, boilies and other food items.

As far as hookbaits are concerned, it's hard to beat hair-rigged corn (right) and this formed the main line of attack.
